Pilot Injured After Chopper Makes Emergency Landing In Park

NEAR WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say the pilot of a Bell 47 helicopter was injured in an emergency landing at a park in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the helicopter rolled on its side during the landing after it lost power.

The incident was initially reported by fire officials as a chopper crash.

The situation unfolded Saturday morning about 9:26 a.m. near the intersection of Potrero Avenue and Lerma Road in Whittier Narrows, a recreation site.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department says the incident occurred near the tennis courts and caused a fuel leak of about 100 gallons.

A hazardous material team was also dispatched to the site.

The FAA also said that a passenger in the chopper sustained minor injuries. However, that person declined medical treatment, according to firefighters.
