LAPD Officer Bitten, Another Tasered In Chaotic NoHo Standoff

NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Two LAPD officers were recovering from injuries after a reportedly violent standoff in North Hollywood, police said Monday.

Police responded to a report of a man disturbing patrons at the Laemmle Noho 7 movie theater at 5240 Lankershim Blvd. at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, according to Los Angeles police Lt. Albert Gavin.

KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reports police say upon officers' arrival on the scene, they found a man believed to be a transient lying down in the middle of Lankershim, forcing oncoming vehicles to swerve to avoid hitting him.

When they attempted to take the man — described only as being in his late 30s — into custody, police say the suspect resisted arrest and struggled with officers, who used a stun gun multiple times in an effort to subdue him, according to LAPD Sgt. Mike Kammert.

"In the process, [an officer] ended up in the struggle tasing not only the suspect, which had zero effect on him, but also tasing his partner," Kammert said.

During the struggle, the suspect bit one officer, while another officer was hit with the taser gun, police said. Both officers were treated for their injuries and subsequently released.

As many as eight LAPD officers were needed to eventually subdue the suspect, who stopped breathing following use of the stun gun and required CPR to be resuscitated, police said.

The incident was being investigated as a "use-of-force" incident, police said.
