EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a man was shot and killed in El Monte early Saturday morning.

The deadly shooting occurred in the 11300 block of Medina Court about 12:32 a.m., according to a written statement issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives said the victim was in the driver’s seat of his vehicle when he was shot several times.

The victim — now identified by a coroner’s investigator as 40-year-old Simon Mendoza of Whittier — was struck several times in the chest. Mendoza died at the scene.

A second victim,  a woman, was seated in the passenger seat. She sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

The suspected shooter remains at large.
