Burglar Steals Cash, Computers From Disadvantaged Kids Group In The Valley

SAN FERNANDO (CBSLA.com) — A burglar stole cash and computers this week from a group of disadvantaged kids in the San Fernando Valley.

CBS2's Joy Benedict says the kids are heartbroken but not discouraged.

The theft took place in the 400 block of South Brand Boulevard in San Fernando.

"They took everything. The boxes, the chocolate, they took the money," said one group volunteer. "It was a big slap in the face."

The non-profit agency -- Youth Speaks -- benefits teens preparing for college.

Jessica Torres, a senior, is one of the kids the group helps. She's been a member since she was a freshman at San Fernando High School.

"I was left speechless," she said of the theft.

She had been selling candy for years, to help raise money for a trip north to scout colleges.

"I'm the first one in my family to go to college," she said.

Today, she and other student volunteers helped out at a local community garden.

Police believe the burglars entered through a back door.

In all, about $600 was stolen. It was going to be spending money for the 12 students making the trip.
