Authorities say he should be considered armed and dangerous and have reason to believe he may be hiding in or traveling through the L.A.-area, possibly en route to Mexico.

KCAL9's Serene Branson reports FBI agents in Los Angeles say Briggs may have recently been spotted in Oakland and San Francisco.

According to a FBI bulletin, Briggs escaped custody on February 1, shortly after his arrest.

A woman called the Bozeman Police Department to report an assault, and said her attacker had attempted to strangle her before he left. Police located Briggs, who was taken into custody. He allegedly resisted arrest and hit an officer in the face.

Briggs escaped custody upon transfer to the Law and Justice Center in Bozeman.

He is believed to have traveled to Missoula, Montana, where he bought a one-way bus ticket to Spokane, Washington the evening of February 1.

KCAL9 has learned the person who drove him to a Greyhound bus station told the FBI Briggs' plan was to head through California and enter into Mexico without using a border station.

A federal unlawful flight to avoid prosecution warrant was obtained in the United States District Court for the District of Montana  Missoula, Montana on February 7, based on the state charges of aggravated assault, attempted sexual intercourse without consent, assault on a peace officer and escape.

At the time of the latest incident, Briggs was on probation for previous convictions in 2004 of sexual intercourse without consent, aggravated kidnapping, escape, and burglary in Lewis and Clark County, Montana.

The FBI says Briggs has a sunburst tattoo around his right nipple, a tattoo in his armpit and a tattoo on his lower lip, as well as a double "snake bite" piercing on his bottom lip. He also has a bellybutton piercing and pierced ears.

Authorities say in addition to California and Mexico, Briggs may travel to Washington state and Oregon. He may be staying in homeless shelters while earning money to travel and  may attempt to alter his appearance by growing out his hair and beard and dying his hair black. He was last seen wearing gray sweatpants, a dark-colored hooded jacket or parka, black shoes, and a dark baseball cap.

Briggs has used aliases including Kevin Bacon, Aimee MacIntire, Timothy McCoy, James Meismer and James Zenon Meismer.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to his location and arrest.
