Man Arrested In Fatal Beating Of Hawthorne Taxi Driver

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Police have nabbed a 28-year-old man they suspect killed a South LA taxi driver last Monday.

Cedric Dominic Staten, of Gardena, was arrested Thursday in Los Angeles, according to Hawthorne police Lt. Scott Swain.

The taxi driver, 53-year-old Eddy Nwanyanwu, was reportedly embroiled in an argument with an unidentified woman over a parking spot in Hawthorne.

The woman reportedly called her relative to the parking area. Staten showed up and punched Nwanyanwu in the head, knocking him to the ground.

Police say surveillance video at the scene, located at 12821 South Prairie Avenue, shows Staten running away after the attack.

Officers arrived to find the taxi driver convulsing on the ground. He was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he died.

Staten is being held on $1 million bail. No information was given on upcoming court dates.
