Border Patrol Agents Find Almost 700 Pounds Of Cocaine In Man's Car
SAN CLEMENTE (AP) — Border Patrol agents say they've found nearly 700 pounds of cocaine stuffed into the trunk and back seat of a compact car at a Southern California checkpoint.
Authorities say they became suspicious of a man in a suit and tie who pulled up to a checkpoint near San Clemente shortly after 1 a.m. Friday. The man claimed to be a U.S. citizen but authorities say he was later found to be a Mexican national.
Agents searched the 2011 Hyundai Elantra, which was stuffed with cardboard boxes. They say inside the boxes were 53 packages of cocaine — about 670 pounds with an estimated street value of $6.7 million.
The driver was arrested and turned over to the DEA.
