Mayor Garcetti Acts As Grand Marshal Of Kingdom Day Parade

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Mayor Eric Garcetti was the Grand Marshal of the 29th annual Kingdom Day Parade Monday.

The 11 a.m. parade was the Southland's largest Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance.

The event began at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Crenshaw Boulevard in South LA, continued south on Crenshaw Boulevard and concluded at Vernon Avenue.

This year's theme was "Ain't Gonna' Let Nobody Turn Us 'Round." Celebrity Grand Marshal Shawnie O'Neal, Bernard Parks and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck were among other guests in attendance.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day will also be marked in Los Angeles County by efforts to beautify Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights and Horace Mann Middle School in South Los Angeles; a community clean-up at the Atlantic Theatre in North Long Beach; three community tree plantings elsewhere in Long Beach; a celebration at the Soka Gakkai International Auditorium in Santa Monica; and a blood drive at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
