Man, 27, Sentenced For Murdering Victim With Axe Handle

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities said a man was sentenced Friday to 15 years to life in prison for murdering a man with an axe-handle before fleeing in the victim's car.

The Orange County District Attorney's office says Jorge Santiago Avalos was found guilty in October of one count of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Hilario Urquiza.

The 27-year-old was reportedly drinking at the victim's home when he murdered the victim by hitting him more than a dozen times in the head and face with the handle of an axe, authorities said.

"He then left the victim face-down in a pool of blood, stole the victim's Jeep, and fled the scene," according to the statement.

Avalos was later arrested by police for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

During Friday's sentencing hearing, the victim's son told the court that he thinks of his father every day and sees his dad every time he looks at his daughter.
