Firefighters Tame Raging Fire At Hawthorne Strip Mall

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters are on the scene of a strip mall fire in Hawthorne that has engulfed several businesses.

The fire was reported at approximately 8:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 12700 block of Hawthorne Boulevard near El Segundo Boulevard.

L.A. County Fire Department spokesperson Tony Akins said initial reports indicated the fire started at a liquor store and spread to surrounding structures, causing the collapse of two roofs.

A Super Discount store, an Asian restaurant and one vacant unit are reportedly among the affected businesses. Fire officials said the structures share an attic, which caused the flames to spread quickly.

Dispatchers do not have any reports of injuries.

CBS2's Suzanne Marques reports a CSI vehicle was on the scene Wednesday evening but it is unclear if the circumstances surrounding the blaze are suspicious.

Witnesses said the flames reached at least 100 feet into the air before firefighters were able to tame the fire.

Firefighters are expected to remain on the scene until the early hours of Thursday morning.
