Campus Security Guard Suffers Fatal Heart Attack After Breaking Up Student Fight

VICTORVILLE (CBSLA.com) — Students at a Victorville school are in shock that their beloved campus security guard died of a heart attack shortly after breaking up a fight.

A moment of silence was held Tuesday at Victor Valley High School for Djuan "DJ" Kelly, whom students called "Pops."

"I'm the person who gave him that nickname freshman year when I first met him because he reminded me of my grandfather," student Isaiah Samuel told CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Crystal Cruz.

The 53-year-old guard worked for the district for 13 years.

"Say somebody was doing something wrong, he would say, 'You better stop that,' and he'll get on you like a father figure, and that's what was good about him," Samuel said.

On Monday, Kelly had helped break up a fight between two female students when he started suffering health problems.

The guard said he was experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath and then sat down on the street curb, according to the district superintendent.

Kelly was taken to a hospital, where he died.

A candle has been placed on the curb where Kelly spent some of his last moments.

"He was a good man, a real good man, and he will forever be missed," Samuel said.

Kelly's daughter said the family was too sad to talk about the incident.

A close family friend told Cruz that Kelly experienced heart issues over the past few years.
