Officials Identify Wrong-Way Driver Killed In Head-On Collision In Santa Ana

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities have identified the wrong-way driver who was killed in a head-on collision with a second vehicle in Santa Ana.

Santa Ana police said in a department statement that the man -- now identified as 30-year-old Andres Lopez -- was behind the wheel of a 1989 Nissan Sentra that was speeding westbound on McFadden Avenue in the eastbound lanes.

Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene after colliding with a Chevy pickup truck in the 3000 block of W. McFadden Avenue. The accident happened just before 2 a.m.

Officials said the accident was likely alcohol-related.

The statement said one of the passengers of the Sentra sustained moderate injuries and was expected to survive while a second was in critical condition.

Authorities on Sunday said none of the Sentra's occupants were wearing seat belts and that the car contained several open containers of alcohol.

Police said the driver of the Chevy -- a 48-year-old woman -- sustained moderate but non-life threatening injuries.
