Merger OK'd, But US Airways, American Will Lose Gates At LAX

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com/AP) — The Justice Department says an agreement to allow the merger of US Airways and American Airlines will require the airlines to give up some airport gates at LAX.

The settlement will require American and US Airways to give up gates at Los Angeles International Airport and four other big-city airports to low-cost carriers to offset the impact of the merger.

In August, the government sued to block the merger, saying it would restrict competition and drive up prices for consumers on hundreds of routes around the country.

American will have to give up gates 31A and 31B in Terminal 3 at LAX.
