TSA Observes Moment Of Silence In Honor Of Agent Killed During LAX Shooting
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Transportation Security Administration officers at airports across the country Friday took a moment of silence in memory of a security agent who was fatally shot at Los Angeles International Airport.
The moment of silence honoring 39-year-old Gerardo Hernandez, who was killed during the shooting rampage in Terminal 3 at LAX one week ago, began at 9:20 a.m.
Hernandez was working at a lower-level passenger check-in station when a gunman, who is suspected to be 23-year-old Paul Anthony Ciancia, pulled a semi-automatic weapon out of a duffel bag and began shooting. Federal officials say the suspect was targeting TSA agents.
Hernandez, of Porter Ranch, was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance where he was pronounced dead.
He was the first TSA officer killed in the line of duty, officials said.
"I want to take this moment of silence to just to think about the man that basically makes it possible for me to travel. Because of him, I'm able to travel safely and my heart goes out to the family and loved ones that have lost truly a man that was here to serve," passenger Cathleen Scarvers said.
A memorial has been set up at the initial security checkpoint where Hernandez was shot.
"It's good that they're remembering him," a passenger told KNX1070's Jon Baird.

A public memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.
