Gang Member Charged With Capital Murder In Store Clerk's Shooting
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A reputed gang member was charged Friday with capital murder in the fatal shooting of a 99-cent store clerk.
Eric William Atkinson, 31, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday and prosecutors say they plan to ask he be held without bail, Deputy District Attorney Larry Droeger said.
Atkinson allegedly entered the Happy Bargain 99 cent store in the 7400 block of South Broadway on Sept. 17 and pulled a gun on Martha Sanchez. Prosecutors say a store surveillance video captured the fatal shooting of Sanchez, a married mother of five.
One count of murder with the special circumstance of robbery and personal use of a firearm allegation was filed against Atkinson. Prosecutors say they will decide later whether to seek the death penalty in the case.
Investigators say Sanchez did not resist or fight back during the attack. An estimated $300 was stolen in the robbery, according to detectives.
