LAX Worker Run Over By Alleged Drunk Driver

EL SEGUNDO (CBSLA.com) — A contract worker for the Los Angeles International Airport was run over by a suspected drunk driver early Thursday while on the job.

The accident happened just after 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Sepulveda and Century boulevards near the tunnels that head into the airport, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Police said the worker, who was contacted by the city to change street lights, was walking through the tunnel when the suspect's truck collided with another vehicle that was towing a warning trailer.

"The trailer spun around and hit a worker who was walking in the roadway, pick up cones," Sgt. Ron Pickering said.

The man was hit with such force that he was thrown out of his shoes, police added.

The man, who is in his 30s, was transported to a local hospital, suffering from two broken arms and a concussion. He is currently listed in stable condition.

The driver was arrested on felony charges of driving under the influence, police said.

The California Highway Patrol closed the westbound I-105 at the Sepulveda on- and off-ramps. Northbound Sepulveda Boulevard at Imperial Highway was also closed for the investigation.

No additional details were released.
