Injured Baby Found Next To Dying Woman In Santa Ana Still Unidentified
SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Homicide detectives need help identifying an injured baby who was found next to a dying woman on a Santa Ana roadway late Halloween night.
The girl, believed to be between 10 months and 1 1/2 years old, was discovered bleeding in the traffic lanes on Edinger Avenue around 8 p.m.
The infant was next to a young woman, who later died at a hospital.
Witnesses told police that a dark-colored truck sped away from the scene.
Investigators don't know whether the woman was pushed from the truck with the child in her arms or whether she jumped.
"What's their relationship? Is it mother-daughter? Is there some other relationship? And what is the relationship between them and the person who was driving this vehicle that left the scene? The person didn't slow down, didn't stop, didn't check on them. Why did that happen?" said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
KCAL9's Michele Gile reported that the deceased woman had no identification. Authorities are hoping to match her fingerprints.
"When you get in some type of dispute with your significant other… if there's an argument and someone jumped out of the vehicle and you knew they jumped out of the vehicle into the street, the natural reaction would be to stop and check on them. Especially if you're talking about a very small child," Bertagna said.
Authorities said that if someone claims the child, they hope that will lead them to the identity of the dead victim and the person driving the truck.
