Coachella Valley Rep. Raul Ruiz Aids Man After In-Flight Medical Emergency

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Coachella Valley Congressman Raul Ruiz was hailed as a hero after he cared for a man who suffered a medical emergency while onboard a flight to Dallas early Thursday.

The Congressman was on an American Airlines Flight 175 from Washington, D.C., to Dallas-Fort Worth when a fellow passenger in his 60s lost consciousness.

Ruiz — who is an emergency room physician by trade — along with a firefighter and a flight attendant helped stabilize the sick passenger before the plane made an emergency landing in Raleigh, North Carolina, American Airlines spokesman Mike Trevino said.

Texas Congressman Pete Gallego, who witnessed the incident, tweeted Thursday.

The condition of the man was unknown.

Ruiz was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives last November,  defeating incumbent Mary Bono Mack in the 36th District.
