North Hollywood Explosion Apparently Caused By Man Huffing Gas

NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A man apparently trying to huff gas led to an explosion that rocked a North Hollywood neighborhood in the early morning hours, police said Wednesday.

The blast happened at about 12:25 a.m. Tuesday in the 11300 block of Miranda Street, shattering windows and drawing a response from the bomb squad, Los Angeles police Sgt. Mike Kammert said.

It was determined that the explosion occurred inside the cab of the pickup, which had its roof blown off, and involved a propane tank inside, Kammert said.

Later that night, a man suffering from burns walked into the LAPD's North Hollywood Station and told officers he was in the cab of the truck when some propane leaked from a tank and something sparked the gas, LAPD Sgt. Glenn McNeil said.

The man declined medical treatment.

The man was not arrested and the investigation is ongoing, McNeil said. He said the man walked away from the truck after the blast and sat on a lawn about a block away.
