Judge: Former Rialto District Accountant To Remain In Jail

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — A former Rialto Unified School District accountant accused of stealing $1.8 million in district lunch money will remain in jail, a judge decided Wednesday.

A Fontana judge refused to reduce 48-year-old Judith Oakes' $1.8 million bail or accept a life insurance policy as collateral.

"The family was crushed that we did not get a bail that would allow them to post their bail on their child and mother without breaking the bank of all of these people so it's tough for them to realize their financial limitations," Defense Attorney C. Patrick Milligan said.

Oakes was arrested Aug. 7 after school video recorded her stuffing school lunch money into her bra.

She was charged Tuesday with eight counts of embezzlement by a public or private officer and eight counts of public officer crime, according to the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office.

If convicted, she could face 11 years in state prison.
