LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Two-time Oscar winner Jane Fonda will add another prestige honor to her credits when she is given the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award.

The award is the highest honor bestowed by the organization.

“Jane Fonda is American film royalty,” said Howard Stringer, chairman of the AFI Board of Trustees. “A bright light first introduced to the world as the daughter of Henry Fonda, the world watched as she found her own voice and forged her own path as an actor and a cultural icon. Today she stands tall among the giants of American film, and it is AFI’s honor to present Jane Fonda with its 42nd Life Achievement Award.”

Fonda won the first of her two best actress Oscars in 1972 for her role in “Klute,” in which she portrayed a New York prostitute. Her second came in 1979 for the Vietnam War-era drama “Coming Home.”

Fonda received four other best actress Oscar nominations, for “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?,” “Julia,” “The China Syndrome” and “The Morning After,” along with a best supporting actress nomination for “On Golden Pond” in which she starred opposite dad Henry.

Her other memorable films include “Cat Ballou,” “Barefoot in the Park,” “Barbarella,” “The Electric Horseman” and “9 to 5” to name just a few.

She most recently appeared in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” as Nancy Reagan and appears in HBO’s “The Newsroom” where she plays a Ted Turner-like TV mogul.

Fonda, of course, was married to Ted Turner from 1991 to 2001. The two have remained friends.

Fonda will receive the AFI honor June 5, 2014.

Other recipients of the award include Fonda’s father, Henry, making them the first father/daughter pairing to be honored. Kirk Douglas and Michael Douglas are the only father/son tandem to be named.

Other honorees have included John Ford, James Cagney, Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Bette Davis, Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, James Stewart, Fred Astaire, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Barbara Stanwyck, Jack Lemmon, Sidney Poitier and Elizabeth Taylor.
