Standout Valencia High Basketball Player Collapses During Practice

VALENCIA (CBSLA.com) — A standout Valencia High School basketball player suffered a medical emergency Wednesday afternoon on campus.

Chimy Ikonte told KCAL9's Serene Branson that his younger brother, Chibuzo, collapsed after 30 minutes of practice on the basketball court.

"It was a chaotic, terrifying, very scary moment," he said. "A sports med came in and they helped him, they tried to revive him."

Ikonte, who is also on the basketball team, said paramedics helped Chibuzo regain consciousness. He then rode with his brother to the hospital.

Many of Chibuzo's classmates took to Twitter to wish him well.

"He's such a nice kid. It shouldn't even happen to him, but you know, stuff happens, but I hope he gets better. I hope he's just safe and sound and he can play basketball and win us so many games," said Aja Adams.

Ikonte said he's thankful for the students' support.

"He's going to be okay. He's getting ready for the season. I thank them for all their prayers and their thoughts," he said.

Chibuzo is staying the night at a Los Angeles hospital.

Meantime, the district confirmed the incident, but wouldn't provide any more information.
