Dozens Remain Evacuated After Methane Gas Leak In Hawthorne
HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Hawthorne police say a methane gas leak in the area has prompted the evacuation of dozens of residents.
Officers said in a department statement that the evacuations of 27 homes in the area of Imperial Highway and Truro Avenue began Friday evening as a result of the leak.
Firefighters said that water possibly mixed with methane gas was seeping from an abandoned water well.
By Saturday morning, approximately 125 residents on Truro Avenue and on the east side of Condon Avenue were relocated to nearby hotels.
County hazmat crews have been on scene while private companies work to cap the leaks. Water is being used to eliminate any static electricity.
The cause of the leak remains unclear.
