LAPD Says Suspect Involved In Chase Fatally Shot Himself

VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Police Department says a suspect they chased Thursday is dead.

The suspect reportedly shot himself, said officials.

The man, believed to be a parolee, was being pursued while he rode a motorcycle erratically through Van Nuys.

As police made entry into the suspect's apartment, they said they heard a gunshot.

The suspect drove at high speeds through Van Nuys. So as not to danger the public, police followed him by helicopter and didn't engage with the suspect on the ground.

The chase ultimately ended in Winnetka.

Stu Mundel, reporting in Sky9, said the suspect was blowing through red lights and driving on the wrong side of the road.

The suspect was clearly trying to evade capture. Police did not reveal what he was on parole for.

After about ten minutes, the rider abandoned the bike and went on a foot bail.

A police helicopter followed the suspect but lost sight of him on a tree-lined street. The chase ended in the Winnetka area of Roscoe and Mason.

Police searched for the suspects on rooftops before realizing the suspect fled to his own apartment.

There was a standoff for several hours before police entered the apartment.
