Mountain Lion Spotted In Elementary School's Parking Lot In La Crescenta

LA CRESCENTA (CBSLA.com) — A mountain lion was spotted on the campus of Monte Vista Elementary in La Crescenta Wednesday morning.

Principal Suzanne Risse told KNX 1070's Megan Goldsby that the animal was seen in a parking lot just after 6 a.m.

"My custodian alerted me to the fact that he had seen a mountain lion on the parking lot," she said.

Risse said they called the sheriff's department, but the animal jumped over a fence and ran off before they arrived.

The principal has asked parents not to bring their dogs when picking up the children and to keep their kids in sight. The school also posted fliers about the incident around the school.

"The parents and this community know that wildlife is part of living in a mountain community, but I think having that awareness gave them the opportunity to be extra cautious," said Risse.

Parent Teresa Pino, whose daughter started kindergarten this week, said she's happy with how the school dealt with the sighting.

"We're used to the lions around here, and the deers, and even a few bears. And I'm not going to leave my daughter alone," she said.
