Sharp Fire Prompts Mandatory Evacuations In Wrightwood
WRIGHTWOOD (CBSLA.com) — The Sharp Fire near Wrightwood in the San Gabriel Mountains has burned 60 acres and forced mandatory evacuations, San Bernardino County Sheriff's officials said.
No homes or structures have been damaged.
Helicopters with night vision made water drops Thursday evening.
Seventy-five homes remain under mandatory evacuation orders, including those on Mojave Scenic Dr., East Canyon Dr., Buckthorn Rd., Lone Pine Rd. south of East Canyon Dr., Slippery Elm and Mount Mahogany Rd.
"I'm nervous, absolutely," said one resident who was preparing to leave. "We're all lined up here."
Firefighters responded to the fire at around 1 p.m. Thursday.
"The temperatures went down, humidity went up, slowed the progression of this fire to where we can get our folks in there safely, and they can get some good work done," said a fire official.
Other residents decided to stay in the area. One group was eating pizza on the side of the road after officers had ordered them to leave and put caution tape on their home.
The Red Cross has established an evacuation center at Serrano High School, located at 9292 Sheep Creek Rd. in Phelan.
Meanwhile, more than 1,400 firefighters near Banning are battling the fast-moving Silver Fire, which has spread to 14,000 acres.
