Police Call Off Search In Van Nuys For Arrestee They Say Escaped

VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles police Sunday suspended a search for a suspect they say escaped after being arrested during a major anti-vice operation in Van Nuys.

LAPD Sgt. Jason Zabel says the suspect was one of several to be nabbed on Saturday evening in the area of Sepulveda Boulevard and Bassett Street.

"One of the suspects they had arrested during that operation fought with one of our officers. That suspect then escaped, fled on foot into the surrounding neighborhood," Zabel told KNX 1070.

The suspect had allegedly punched a female officer before getting away, according to KNX 1070.

That officer was said to be okay.

A massive search that included a brief lockdown of a nearby hospital was launched but the suspect wasn't located.

The hunt was called off early Sunday morning, according to the radio station.
