Woman Charged For Allegedly Trying To Run Over Sheriff's Officer At John Wayne Airport

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A 48-year-old woman was charged Thursday for allegedly trying to run over a sheriff's special officer with her sports utility vehicle in a parking garage at John Wayne Airport earlier this week.

Rebecca Lee McLaughlin was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault on a peace officer and aggravated assault. Her bail was set at $500,000. Her arraignment was postponed until Aug. 2.

McLaughlin is accused of driving her Toyota Sequoia into the officer, who was thrown 20 feet, around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in Santa Ana.

The suspect's SUV then jumped a curb and slammed into a parking pole, according to the Orange County district attorney's office.

The officer, who was on bike patrol, was able to get the suspect out of the vehicle and arrest her.

He was then taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

If convicted, McLaughlin could face a life sentence.
