Police Investigating Deadly Rampart Officer-Involved Shooting

WESTLAKE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Wednesday were investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in the Rampart area.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. Tuesday when plainclothes officers were patrolling the area near Pico Boulevard and Bonnie Brae Street for gang activity, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

"An unknown individual approached them in their vehicle. He ultimately produced a handgun and an officer-involved shooting ensued," said Lt. Jeff Pailet.

The unidentified suspect died at the scene.

At least one other suspect reportedly ran into a nearby church where an estimated 50 people were attending a viewing for a deceased gang member, police said.

"They saw a mussel flash coming from the direction of a nearby church. There were several gang members that were observed running into that church," Pailet said.

Officers questioned the churchgoers and arrested one person for having a loaded firearm and another for carrying ammunition.

Police believe the incident was gang related.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

The shooting was under investigation.
