OC Register Starts Newspaper In Long Beach

SANTA ANA (AP) — The Orange County Register is expanding its reach to start a newspaper in the nearby city of Long Beach.

The newspaper reported Tuesday (http://bit.ly/18LTTFM ) that the Long Beach Register will publish six days week and feature coverage of local news, sports and schools, starting Aug. 19.

The move comes as most newspapers are scaling back spending on print editions and as the Register starts publishing five-day-a-week newspapers in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa and Irvine.

It also takes the Register beyond Orange County. Long Beach is a city of about 462,000 people in Los Angeles County and has long been served by the Press-Telegram.

Register publisher Aaron Kushner played down competition between the papers. He says the challenge newspapers face is that many forms of media compete for people's time.
