Armed Robbery Suspect Charged With Trying To Kill LA Officers During Pursuit

VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — An armed robbery suspect who allegedly shot at Los Angeles police officers during a pursuit in Reseda was charged with attempted murder Wednesday.

Kirkham Gastelum, 30, of Mesa, Ariz., is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on two counts each of attempted murder of a peace officer, second-degree robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of second-degree commercial burglary. Prosecutors asked that his bail be set at $2.4 million.

Gastelum and a second suspect, Tyler Gilson, 23, are accused of robbing a pot dispensary in the 7300 block of Reseda Boulevard on Monday.

The suspects were found a short time later and police gave chase.

The men crashed their SUV at the corner of Tampa Avenue and Strathern Street around 5 p.m.

Gastelum then exited the vehicle and reportedly opened fire on police, leaving a patrol car riddled with bullets and one officer injured. He then fled the area.

Gastelum was arrested hours later.

Gilson was also taken into custody, but has since been released on bail. The charges against him were not immediately available.
