Student, 21, Dies After Suffering Severe Burns In Saddleback College Fire

MISSION VIEJO (CBSLA.com) — A 21-year-old student who was severely burned in a fire at Saddleback College has died, the Orange County Coroner's Office said Tuesday.

The fire, which has since been ruled arson, broke out around 6:40 a.m. Monday in the business and general studies (BGS) building on campus, the Orange County Fire Authority said.

The unidentified victim suffered second- and third-degree burns and was airlifted to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he later died, according to fire officials.

Classes in the BGS building were cancelled as the fire, which authorities believe was related to an air conditioning unit, was investigated.

Investigators were trying to determine if the victim ignited the fire, officials said.

Damage was estimated at $400,000 for the structure and its contents.
