Sheriff: Illegal Fireworks To Blame For Walnut Park Fire

WALNUT PARK (CBSLA.com) — A fire at a South Los Angeles carpet store was under investigation Tuesday after authorities believe it was sparked by illegal fireworks.

The fire at "Discount Carpet", located in the 2800 block of East Florence Avenue in Walnut Park, broke out around 5:20 p.m. Monday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

"When deputies and firefighters arrived on scene, the location was fully engulfed in flames, as well as an adjoining barber shop," Deputy Mark Pope said. "They discovered the likely cause of the fire was fireworks. "

The estimated loss to the businesses was in excess of $200,000.

Arson teams were investigating whether an employee was using fireworks outside the business when the fire was ignited, KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reports.
