LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Southern California experienced another day of oppressive triple-digit temperatures as part of a weekend heat wave plaguing several western states.
The National Weather Service (NWS) says excessive heat conditions are expected through Tuesday with anticipated “record or near record high temperatures.”
An excessive heat warning for the entire southwest from Phoenix to Las Vegas to the Southland will remain in effect through the weekend.
CBS2 Meteorologist Kaj Goldberg says the warning is expected to expire locally at 9 p.m. Sunday but could be extended through Monday.
Goldberg says temperatures in Death Valley could reach 128 degrees.
Other predicted highs include 119 in Phoenix; 117 in Las Vegas; and 92 in downtown Los Angeles. Temperatures in the inland areas could reach between 110 degrees to 115.
Historically, the highest recorded temperature was 134 degrees dating back to July 10, 1913.
“We’re going to have a very hot weekend across Southern California,” NWS Meteorologist Rich Thompson told KNX 1070’s Ed Mertz. “Looking for temperatures in the valleys, mountains, and deserts to exceed 100 degrees.”
The NWS says the high temperatures can pose a health hazard, especially for the elderly, the young, and those with existing health conditions.
