“Detectives investigated the homicide in 1996 and developed numerous leads,” Det. Jerry Davenport said in a statement. ” But the homicide investigation remained unsolved.”

The Sheriff’s Cold Case Team reopened the investigation in 2010 and used DNA evidence to identify Bencomo as a suspect. He was 19 years old at the time of the crime, officials said.

Bencomo is being held on $1 million at the West Valley Detention Center.
