Gilroy Man Wounded In Ventura County Deputy-Involved Shooting

WESTLAKE VILLAGE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Sunday said a short pursuit of a man wanted for questioning in a hit-and-run crash came to a violent end in Ventura County.

The pursuit ended shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday near Agoura and Lake View Canyon roads in the Westlake Village.

Authorities say the chase started when the suspect vehicle failed to yield, fleeing east in the westbound lanes of Agoura Road.

"The vehicle sped through a shopping center trying to get away from the deputy," Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Eric Buschow told KNX 1070.

As the suspect drove, Sgt. Buschow says a deputy approached head-on.

"The suspect vehicle actually sped up, accelerated, and deliberately rammed that second deputy's vehicle," the sergeant said.

The suspect then allegedly put his car into reverse and, according to Buschow, headed toward the first deputy who then opened fire.

"The deputy was in fear that the suspect was going to run him down so he fired several shots," the sergeant said.

The suspect was struck by the gunfire. He was taken to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center and is expected to survive. The deputies were uninjured.

Authorities have since identified the suspect as 33-year-old Rogelio Gutierrez of Gilroy.

No further information was immediately available.
