State Sen. Ron Calderon Promises He'll Be Cleared In FBI Probe

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) — Democratic State Sen. Ron Calderon of Montebello returned to the Capitol Monday, nearly a week after FBI agents searched his Sacramento offices to investigate alleged criminal wrongdoing.

In a brief statement outside Senate chambers, Calderon said the past week has been very stressful, but he intends to continue working.

"My family and I have gone through a lot in the last several days. It's been very stressful; it's been very hard on all of us," he said. "We're all anxious to put this behind us and carry on a normal life."

In a statement issued through his attorney, Mark Geragos, Calderon also said, "Please understand that I will not be able to answer any questions regarding the search of last week. However, I can say without hesitation that when all the facts are in, any questions, suspicions or allegations of illegality will be erased."

The Associated Press reported last week that three people who have spoken multiple times with the FBI said agents initially were interested in virtually anything involving Ron Calderon and his brother, Tom, but more recently narrowed their questions to issues surrounding the Central Basin Municipal Water District.

The district paid Tom Calderon $11,000 per month as a consultant. Agents also wanted to know about Ron Calderon's involvement in legislation affecting the district.

No arrests had been made, nor charges filed, as of this afternoon in connection to the investigation.
