1 Killed As Driver Strikes 3 Vehicles In El Sereno Pursuit

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A police pursuit that lasted only one minute ended with one person dead after the driver crashed his SUV into three other vehicles in the El Sereno area of Los Angeles.

The pursuit began when Los Angeles Police attempted to pull over a silver SUV just before 1p.m. on Saturday for reckless driving.

LAPD said the pursuit started at 12:48p.m. and ended a minute later in the 5300 block of Poplar Blvd near Huntington Drive.

The driver of the SUV struck three vehicles, killing the driver of a silver Camry.

"It's pretty hard knowing that a friend that's almost like a brother died," said Jocelyn Castaneda, whose brother Juan was the only passenger in the Camry.

He was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena.

"He's okay, they're just checking in on him. Other than that he's fine," she said.

According to Castaneda, her brother and the driver were on their way to eat before going to a concert in Pasadena.

A truck that was trying to turn left was also struck by the silver SUV and flipped over. The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

The driver of the silver SUV reportedly climbed out of the crash and ran limping from the scene, according to police.

He was bitten by a police canine and taken on a stretcher to the back of an ambulance at the scene.

Police said they do not know if the SUV was stolen. A gun was reportedly found in the vehicle.

On Sunday, the LA Times reported the deceased was Julio Cesar Reyes-Salvador of Los Angeles.
