Detective Killed In Dorner Shootout Honored By Sheriff's Department
SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — A San Bernardino Sheriff's Detective killed in the February manhunt with Christopher Dorner was honored Thursday by the department that he served for 15 years.
Detective Jeremiah MacKay was killed in the line of duty Feb. 12 during a gun battle with the ex-LAPD officer in the Angelus Oaks area of Big Bear.
Friends, family and fellow deputies gathered Thursday for the unveiling of Detective MacKay's name on the fallen peace officer monument.
"This is a way for us to honor Detective MacKay for all of his sacrifices, as well as those that came before him," said Sheriff John McMahon.
The memorial is one step in the healing process for the entire department.
On Wednesday night, San Bernardino Sheriff's Deputy Alex Collins, who was shot three times and seriously wounded in the same gun battle, threw the first pitch at the Angels-Dodgers game.
"The community has been great. I've been getting letters, phone calls, emails," Collins told KCAL9's Jim Hill. "I'm just so proud to be a member of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. A huge, great family."
Earlier this month, a Redlands Police Officer who was among the four officers ambushed by Dorner and who helped transport Collins and MacKay from the scene was honored with the Mayor's Award from the Redland's City Council.
Detective MacKay grew up in the area and worked for the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department for 15 years.
His is the thirteenth name on the memorial for officers who died in the line of duty.
