Against his attorney’s wishes, the 54-year-old Orange resident said he wanted to deliver a message to Ramos’ family.
“Next time probably they may see me or hear from me is probably going to be from trial,” said Joy.
“Those family know, I took care of her, and I would have never laid a finger on her for anything in the world,” he said. “She was my dream.”
Police say after an argument earlier this month Joy killed Ramos and dumped her body near Modjeska Canyon, a claim Joy denies.
“Our family’s totally broken apart,” Joy said in the interview.
Lucy Gonzales, Maribel Ramos’ sister, was too distraught to speak on camera. As she listened to the interview, she braced herself every time she heard her sister’s accused killer refer to Maribel as family.
Ramos’ sister said Joy was obsessed with Maribel, and that Maribel did not feel the same way.READ MORE: LA Facing $550M Revenue Shortfall On Sharp Declines In Transient, Parking Occupancy Taxes
Last year, his feelings were reportedly so intense that Gonzales told him it would be best if he moved out. According to Gonzalez, Joy refused.
In the interview, Joy said he is heartbroken and has lost his best friend.
“The reason I’m talking to you I don’t want to give them the impression I’m running away, showing my guilt,” said Joy.
If convicted, Joy is facing 25 years to life.
He is being held in Orange County jail on $1 million bail.
