Officers Shoot, Wound Alleged Knife-Wielding Suicidal Man In Moreno Valley

MORENO VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Sunday said a man has been hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting in Moreno Valley.

Investigators say officers from the Moreno Valley Police Department responded to a call of a man attempting to commit suicide in a locked bathroom.

The 10:30 p.m. call was placed by the man's roommate who told authorities that he was cutting himself with a knife.

Upon arriving to the 24000 Block of Fir Avenue, officers say they persuaded the man to come out of the bathroom. Authorities say he initially complied and dropped his knife.

"Without warning, the male suddenly bent down and grabbed the knife," a statement issued by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said. "He raised it above his head and made threatening statements directed towards the officers as he advanced towards them."

The man was struck once by gunfire. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening wounds, including self-inflicted cuts.

No further information was available.
