Huntington Park Man Arrested For Attempted Murder After 8 Years On The Run

HUNTINGTON PARK (CBSLA.com) — An attempted murder suspect is being held on more than $1 million bail after eight years on the run.

Juan Jose Vargas is accused of stabbing his girlfriend on Nov. 21, 2004 at their home in the 6200 block of Marbisa Avenue, the Huntington Park Police Department said.

Vargas and the woman got into an argument and he reportedly "stabbed the victim several times in a violent attack," police said.

The suspect fled the scene before police arrived. The victim survived.

Vargas was on the lam until April 24, 2013 when Huntington Park police learned he was being held in an Arizona jail.

"Vargas had been detained by the U.S. Border Patrol while trying to enter the United States illegally," officials said.

Authorities later determined he had an outstanding warrant for the 2004 attempted murder in California.

Vargas was extradited to Los Angeles and booked at the LA County Jail. He is being held on $1, 050,000 bail.
