McAuliffe Middle School Students To Host 'Baking For Boston' Sale

LOS ALAMITOS (CBSLA.com) — Students at McAuliffe Middle School are doing their part to help Boston recover from the marathon bombings.

On Thursday night, they put the final touches on the cupcakes, cookies and brownies that will be sold Friday at a school-wide bake sale to benefit those affected by last week's tragedy.

They say they were especially touched by the death of 8-year-old Martin Richard.

"A month before this happened, he wrote a sign about no more killing people," sixth-grader Jessica Ridgeway told KCAL9's Juan Fernandez.

Ridgeway and Merritee Shehata started their campaign, Bucks For Boston, on Monday. They began collecting pennies, but when more and more students wanted to join them, Baking For Boston was born.

"We've achieved something big," Shehata said.

Not only are the kids proud of what they've achieved, but so are their parents.

"The response has been overwhelming," Tricia Ridgeway said. "At first they had a goal of raising $100, which they achieved within minutes of an email going out, so I think they've raised their goal a bit and we've had baked goods showing up at the doorstep all day, and people are promising to drop things at the school tomorrow, so I think it's going to be a nice turnout."

All of the funds will be going to onefundboston.org
