SAN PEDRO (CBSLA.com) — An overnight standoff with a barricade suspect forced the closure of an elementary school Wednesday morning.

The barricade situation began just before 8 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 700 block of South Meyler Street in San Pedro, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

According to officials, the man and the female homeowner got into an argument over the care of an elderly woman when he pulled out a gun.

He reportedly fired one shot at the woman who was later able to escape uninjured.

The elderly woman also remained in the home, however police said she was not a hostage.

The man was taken into custody just after 10:22 a.m., according to authorities.

Classes were canceled at Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and surrounding residences were evacuated, police said.
