Gibson Amphitheatre To Close In September

UNIVERSAL CITY (CBSLA.com) —  The Gibson Amphitheatre will close its doors in September after more than 40 years hosting concerts, award shows and more, officials announced Wednesday.

Live Nation declined to specify why the venue was closing, but said a farewell concert is in the works.

"We are honored to have been a part of its remarkable story. While a change like this is difficult, we look forward to putting together a series of great shows that will celebrate everything about this marvelous building," Bret Gallagher, of Live Nation, said in a news release.

One possible reason for the closure could be Universal Studios' planned $1.6 billion upgrade which will include new theme park attractions, a hotel, studio space and more.

Originally named Universal Amphitheatre, the nearly 6,200-seat venue has played host to the MTV Movie Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards and NAACP Image Awards, as well as artists such as Bob Dylan, Madonna, Elton John, the Beach Boys, Grateful Dead, Pearl Jam and the Eagles.

Live Nation concerts scheduled at the venue will be relocated and fans should hold onto their tickets, the company said. If a show cannot be moved then fans will receive a full refund.
