Ventura Naval Base Cancels Air Show, Other Public Events Over Federal Budget Cuts

VENTURA (AP) — No angels, no air show.

A day after the U.S. Navy canceled the remainder of the elite Blue Angels demonstration team's 2013 season, Naval Base Ventura County announced that it will not hold the 44th annual presentation of its popular air show in September.

Base commander Capt. Larry Vasquez said in a statement Wednesday that events like the air show can only be held if there is no cost to the federal government, and without the crowds brought out by the Blue Angels, that won't be possible.

Federal budget cuts have already forced the cancellation of many of the base's public events, including the Mud Run, the Admiral's Cup Triathlon and the Point Mugu Surf Contest.

The Blue Angels also had scheduled appearances in San Diego and San Francisco.
