After Creating Disturbance, Man Leaves Suspicious Backpack At Hospital

PANORAMA CITY (CBSLA.com) — Officials say a man created a disturbance at Mission Community Hospital in Panorama City Sunday evening and left behind a suspicious backpack.

The hospital is located in the 14000 block of Roscoe Boulevard.

Authorities said they got a call about 6:30 p.m. about a man causing a disturbance at the facility.

Police arrived and took the man into custody.

The man's backpack was left behind prompting the bomb squad to be called as a precaution.

Ten staffers and 41 patients were evacuated from the first floor and ER.

Andrea Fujii, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, said the bomb squad used a water cannon on the device at about 8:45 p.m. and determined it was just a bag of clothing.

She also reported that the man who caused the disturbance made several threats against the hospital staff.

When he was placed in custody, he told police he left a bomb behind.

ER patient Rachel Baker told Fujii that the man was "acting incredibly suspicious." So the idea he might have actually had a bomb was very scary. "He was cradling the bag and wouldn't let go of it."

Police told Fujii they are "very familiar" with the suspect as he has had "many run-ins with the law."
