Police Investigating Rape Near Occidental College

EAGLE ROCK (CBSLA.com) —  Police are investigating a rape near Occidental College located in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The sexual assault reportedly happened just after midnight on Sunday in the 4900 block of Range View Avenue, which is an area filled with homes, student housing and a fraternity.

Detectives, who are actively searching for the suspect, would not say if the victim was a college student.

Student Carly Wright said administrators never informed her about the attack.

"Part of Range View extends on to our campus…it's kind of shocking to hear that," she said after KCAL9's Suraya Fadel told her about the incident.

Wright continued, "We'd feel safer if we got some kind of an alert from our campus. I wouldn't expect them to be able to say a lot, but at least let the students know what's going on."

In a statement, Occidental spokesperson Jim Tranquada said, "Federal student privacy laws don't allow us to comment. More generally, we take reports like this very seriously and conduct our own investigation regardless of whether law enforcement is involved."
