LA Port Workers Protest After Mechanic Layoffs
WILMINGTON (CBSLA.com) — Dozens of employees at the Port of Los Angeles were on the picket line Friday over alleged unfair hiring practices.
The demonstration got underway at 6 a.m. at East Anaheim Street and Eubanks Avenue and was expected to draw as many as 500 protesters who may disrupt operations, a source told CBS2.
So-called "casuals" or part-time workers are upset the Port has given full-time longshoremen jobs to mechanics affected by recent layoffs.
It was unclear how long the demonstrations would continue.
There was no immediate response from Port officials.
