STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend but ladies may still need to better familiarize themselves with this lustrous gem.

Shoppers often visit various jewelry stores and make the mistake of comparing pricing when the diamonds aren’t equivalent, Ruth Levy, of Gail Jewelers, told KCAL9.

Prospective buyers need to make sure that, when surveying different stores’ pricing, they are comparing the same cut, clarity, color, carat weight and lab of certification.

Most shoppers tend to overlook the diamond’s cut but Levy calls that characteristic extremely important.

Levy also offered valuable advice on gem and jewelry shopping and on how to spot a fake.
